Tisha b’Av
The ninth day of the Hebrew month of Av- known as Tisha b’Av– is the day of Jewish national mourning. Tisha b’Av commemorates the destruction of both Temples in Jerusalem along with other tragedies in Jewish History.
This year the fast begins on Saturday night August 2nd until Sunday night August 3rd
Shabbos Afternoon
-Final meal before the fast will be Shalosh Seudos-3rd Shabbos meal (can eat or drink whatever one would like)
-But must finish eating before 7:53 PM (LA time)
-This year we do not eat the special meal before Tisha b’Av since its Shabbos
Saturday Evening
– We remove leather shoes before evening services.
-Evening Services followed by blessing on fire only-no full Havdalah and the reading of the Book of Lamentations
– Recommend using ArtScroll’s The Complete Tishah B’Av Service (we have at JLE)
– Inspiring Stories at JLE at 9:50 PM
– Custom to listen to reading of Lamentations at night and read some Elegies during the day
– The restrictions for Saturday night through Sunday night include:
– (For adults) No food or drink at all (medications that must be taken, use a shot glass of water)
– No wearing leather sneakers, shoes, or slippers
– No anointing oneself
– No washing of one’s body – Hands can be washed until the knuckles
– No marital relations
– No greeting others or giving gifts
– Turning on/off lights, air conditioning, driving etc ARE allowed
– Job-related work is NOT allowed (distracting)
– Tallis (prayer shawls) and tefillin (phylacteries) are NOT worn during Morning Services, but ARE
worn for Afternoon Services (at J.L.E. at 7:00 PM)
– At the end of Morning Services with Torah reading, recite some sections of Elegies (pages 152 -398 in ArtScroll’s The Complete Tishah B’Av Service) at JLE with commentaries by Rabbi Lebovics and Rabbi Trainer
– Required to sit on the floor or low chairs from nightfall on Saturday until 12:59 PM on Sunday
– Special video presentations all afternoon at JLE: Program A 12pm & 4pm, Program B 2pm and 5:40pm
– Afternoon services with special Torah reading
– Kiddush Levanah-Sanctification of the New Moon and abridged Havdalah-Just blessing on wine or grape juice, no spices and no candle
– Fast ends at 8:32 pm (LA time)
– 9 days restrictions continue until midday Monday, August 4th at 1:00pm (no haircuts, meat, wine, music, nor laundry)
